CFRP Renewal of the 1500mm Herridge Feedermain,
The 1500mm Herridge Feedermain is a Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP), approximately 6 km long, exhibiting signs of deterioration. The pipe was dormant for 2 years with fears of catastrophic failure that required rehabilitation.
Based on the degree of deterioration, the CFRP renewal systems were designed either as a stand-alone or as a composite system with the concrete inner core of the PCCP. The feedermain runs under major crowded roads/highways, where it was extremely difficult to repair/renew the feedermain through excavation. Hence, the trenchless technique was required.
TCI CarbonStrong SPL structural liner, combined with TCI ProTecStrong SPL protective coating system were used to renew the existing feedermain and provide the required environmental protection for both the concrete and the CFRP repair material.
TCI introduced a new termination joint specifically developed for CFRP renewal of PCCP watermains. The new termination detail and TCI coating system passed a comprehensive water tightness testing, where TCI products have shown that the finished coating system can withstand at least triple the applied internal pressure without showing any signs of leakages, especially at the CFRP termination joints.
The feedermain was put into service in late 2016 and is currently working fine with no issues.
North York, Ontario
Renovation of the Lois Hancey aquatic centre in North York, involved the structural repair and strengthening of the reinforced concrete wall of the equipment room to sustain the applied dynamic wave load.
The wall was showing signs of distress and cracking, which required strengthening and repair work. ProTecStrong SPL was used to repair the damages in the concrete wall before applying the structural CFRP reinforcement.
TCI CarbonStrong SPL was used in a two layer system to reinforce the wall and raise its structural capacity to resist the new loading conditions arising from the new wave producing equipment.
TCI products were successfully installed and have been in service for years without any defects or signs of distress.
The underground parking levels at the Chelsea Toronto hotel were repaired using TCI CarbonStrong SPL to increase the shear and flexural strength of many deteriorated beams. The beams exhibited signs of deterioration and loss of steel rebar due to corrosion.
Batch repair of spalled concrete was done using ProTecStrong SPL as a structural repair material to restore the integrity of the deteriorated beams.
Inspection of the repaired beams has shown no signs of defects after many years of service. The bond of TCI products to the concrete substrate proved to be very strong and adequate to resist the traffic loads in the underground parking at the Hotel.
